Youth Speaks Report

We have been treated to a veritable feast of young talent this year throughout the Youth Speaks competition. Thirty seven teams took part in the semi-finals at Grantham, Bedford and Leicester.

The teams reached a very high standard and al the adjudicators were left with the unenviable task of trying to decide which teams should go forward.

It was a night of high tension at Wellingborough School when teams from Bourne Grammar School, Garendon High School, Northampton High School Woodbrook Vale and two teams from Holmemead Middle School took to the stage in the District Intermediate Final.

Meanwhile in the school chapel the District Senior Final was being contested by Bourne Grammar School, The Ferrers Specialist Arts College, Kimbolton School, Northampton High School, Twycross House School and Woodbrook Vale Graduates.

In the seniors 1st place went to Twycross House School and runners up The Ferrers Specialist Arts College. The evening was well supported by parents, friends and Rotarians.

The next challenge was the Regional Final held on Sunday 14th March at Radcliffe on Trent Village Hall. Teams representing Districts 1040, 1070, 1220 and 1270 took part in both sections.

The Intermediate competition took place in the morning and at its conclusion the judges complimented everyone on the standards of their performance but were in no doubt that the winner of the Intermediate Regional Youth Speaks was Bourne Grammar School  their subject – To P.E. or not to P.E. -  much to the delight of all the 1070 supporters – well done.

At the end of the Senior Presentations the judges took longer in their deliberations and returned with the words we want to send two teams forward – those being Twycross House School and Ferrers Specialist Arts College – having been told that only one could go forward they announced Ferrers as the winner of the Senior section – their subject – Communication in the Modern World. Congratulations to them this was the first year they have entered the competition!

I'm sure we shall be routing for them on Sunday 8th May at the UK Final.

If your Rotary Club does not currently have youth speaks as part of your Youth Opportunities program I would be delighted to encourage you to include it!
