Immediate Past District Governormessage from immediate past district governor, iain vernonReview of 2008-9
It is time to reflect on our progress – has it been a good year? Undoubtedly, yes. Of course, everything hasn’t gone according to plan – the serious recession has seen to that. As a result of the deteriorating exchange rate with the US dollar, our Rotary Foundation and Polio Eradication contributions buy fewer dollars, and our actual UK giving is less than we hoped for, too. But let’s look at all the good things that have happened. We have chartered two new Rotary clubs, two new Rotaract clubs and two new Interact clubs. Our membership is up. Our district conference in Torquay was a great success. Attendance at all our district seminars and training sessions was excellent, and the attendees were keen to participate. Our district was chosen to take part in the Rotary Foundation Future Vision scheme trial: this is good news and means that we will play a major part in keeping ahead of the game and actually having the opportunity to shape the changes in the final scheme. All the competitions have been well supported: whether they be run for our own fun, such as Minor Sports or District Quiz; or as projects for youth, such as Youth Speaks and Young Musician. And our district has had competitors at Multi-district and RIBI level, with considerable success. Macmillan Cancer Support is absolutely delighted with the tremendous help which we have given them right across our district. Our Schools4All project in Uganda is now underway, although more money is needed to fulfil our commitment to prepare a school totally for the intake of disabled pupils. You have an amazing range of worthwhile club projects both in your local community and overseas. Shelterbox and WaterAid continue to be strongly supported. I had better stop before this article turns into a long and boring list – suffice it to say that you really are making dreams real for so many. We have a super district team and that is the major reason our district does so much, and is so well regarded at RIBI. That has been evidenced by the great frequency with which our RIBI President Ian Thomson and Joan have been in our district to support us in our work. It has been a privilege to work with Ian and Joan this last year. At RIBI, efforts to make the operation more cost effective and professional are beginning to pay off. What about on a personal level? I have been ‘putting myself about’ as much as I can and it has been a rewarding experience. You have always received me well (perhaps too well on occasions!); I have met so many lovely people – Rotarians, partners and guests. Jo and I are deeply grateful to you all. My abiding impression is that you are doing so much great work at all levels; for me, it has been an eye-opening and humbling experience. We have great clubs and a great district – I leave Rotary in district 1070 in good shape, and know that we can have another positive year in 2009-2010. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all – and keep up the good work! Iain Vernon
