The  range of programmes for students and youth offered by the clubs of  Rotary District 1070  can change the lives of those who participate.

Through these programmes and competitions, young people can earn scholarships, travel on cultural exchanges, or help a community through a service project.

Rotary competitions are designed to enable young people to demonstrate and develop their skills and talents and to build their levels of self confidence and life skills.

The programmes and competitions take place at local, regional, national and international levels.

A summary of the programmes are shown in the Youth Services handbook with full details shown on the individual web pages. Just click on the appropriate link  to see some of what Rotary has to offer.

Youth news

01/04/2019 Young Writer competition 2019

Congratulations to all of the entrants to the district 1070 round of the Young Writer competition. The winning entries were:

Junior age group – Ellerker Warne Spaldwick Primary School

Intermediate age group – Wiktoria Flisek Leicester High School for girls

Senior age group – Dan Hewitt – Ashby School

For more details please see Young Writer competition web page.

08/03/2019 Young Designer 2019

Unfortunately the Young Designer contest has had to be cancelled. New rules introduced by the education authorities forbid GCSE and A level designs being exhibited in public before the exam results are released. The schools are therefore unable to enter candidates work and it has therefore, sadly, been necessary to cancel the event.

Young Artist & Young Photographer

The finals of both these competitions were due to be held at the Young designer event. This, of course, is now not possible. The winners will be notified by post and it is hoped that the winning entries can be exhibited at District Conference.

Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

18/01/19  YOUNG MUSICIAN 2018 -19

After consultation and considerations of entry numbers, particularly in the east/south of the District, the increasing refusal of many suitable premises to open on a Sunday this year, the escalating costs of hiring suitable premises, and the reluctance of many fellow Rotarians to help with the organisation of 3 separate events (2 Semi-Finals and the District Final), we have decided on a different format for this year’s competition, which we believe will produce our usual variety and standard of excellence in the District Final. Last year’s entries included 26 in the junior category, 20 in the intermediate category, and only 12 in the senior category – and that was before the weather got in our way! We are therefore holding ONE semi-final this year, for the junior and intermediate categories. Any entries into otherwise uncontested classes will go directly to the final as will any senior entries. The Semi-final will be held at The Soar Valley Music Centre/Claremont Methodist Church, Claremont St., Leicester LE4 7QG on 9th March 2019, and the District Final will be held at Leicester Grammar School, London Rd., Great Glen, Leicester LE8 9FL on 24th March 2019. Both of these are tried and tested. Only having one semi-final may cause some timing difficulties for young people involved in County Music activities on Saturday mornings, but we will be as sympathetic and flexible as possible when timetabling the semi-final.  N.B Closing date for entries is 9th February 2019.

The national final of the competition will be held on Sat 27th April 2019   at Leeds City College, Printworks Campus, Hunslet Road, Leeds, LS10 1JY

15/01/2019 Young Scientists of the Year for Primary Schools

Some of you will have heard the enthusiasm of Judith Green of the Ogden Trust speaking at the District Conference concerning the successful partnership with the Rotary Club of Market Harborough and Primary Schools. Participating schools selected teams of four students; two from year 4 and two from year 5 to undertake science challenges supervised by an adult (teacher or Rotarian). We are exploring the possibility of other Clubs participating with a commitment (which could be with Clubs working together) of seed funding to purchase equipment and annual funding to provide trophies etc; and Rotarians to help run the competition and present trophies and certificates. Please e-mail YouthService@Rotary1070.org if you would like further details.
